TOEFL Listening Exercises 6 to 11: Communicative Activities

     TOEFL Listening Exercise 6: Haifa Class (Pairs Activity)

To do this activity, you will need to live in a community where there is a university or college in which English is the language of instruction. With a partner, decide what type of class you would like to visit. Then call the department (art, economics. biology, etc.) and try to get permission to visit a class. You or your partner will attend the first half of the class and take notes, and then the other person will attend the second half. Afterwards, use your notes to tell your partner what happened in the half of the class that your partner missed.

     TOEFL Listening Exercise 7: Write Your Own TOEFL Items (Small- Group Activity)

Find a suitable lecture and record it. There are many Web sites that feature lectures. One of the best is Listen to the lecture as a group and take notes. Then write five TOEFL-like multiple-choice questions about the lecture. Next, exchange lectures and questions with another group. After you've answered the other group's questions, check with the group that wrote the "test" and see if your group has answered the questions correctly.

     TOEFL Listening Exercise 8: Who Are They and What Are They Talking About? (Individual/pairs Activity)

Your instructor or coordinator will record a conversation from a television show or a movie and play it in class. Take notes. Then answer these basic questions about the conversation:

1. Who was speaking?

2. Where were they?

3. What were they talking about?

4. What were their attitudes toward each other?

Compare your answers with those of your partner. Then watch the show again and take further notes. Now you and your partner will write a paraphrase of the conversation. (In other words, you are to rewrite the conversation in your own words.) Perform your paraphrase for the class. The class can then vote on whose paraphrase was closest in meaning and feeling to the original.

     TOEFL Listening Exercise 9: Say It with Feeling (Class Activity)

One student acts as "scribe" (writer). On the board, this student writes as many adverbs (words ending with -ly) as possible that describe emotions or attitudes, based on suggestions from the class (angrily, proudly, nervously, for example). Next, each student will write a series of sentences, such as the following:

1. Write a sentence about your family.

2. Write a sentence about a trip.

3. Write a sentence about the TOEFL test.

and so on.

Students then read their sentences in a way that demonstrates one of the adverbs written on the board. For example, a student might say "My brother is 2¬good football player" proudly. Other students in class then try to guess what feeling/ attitude the speaker is expressing.

     TOEFL Listening Exercise 10: Reduced-Forms Contest (Pairs Activity)

Your instructor or coordinator will give you a list of sentences that are missing certain phrases. He or she will then read you a list of sentences with reduced forms. (Reduced forms are two or more words that are pronounced as if they were one word.)

1. Wouldja c'mere for a minute?

2. Howzee doing in that class?

3. Couldja get me a cuppa tea, please'?

______ for a minute? ______ doing in that class? ______ get me a ______ tea, please?

With your partner, decide which words are missing and write the full form of each reduced phrase.

Would you come here for a minute? How is he doing in that class?

Could you get me a cup of tea, please?

The pair that correctly writes down the most missing phrases wins.

     TOEFL Listening Exercise 11: Student Teacher (Individual Activity)

Your instructor/coordinator will choose several students to teach one of the five Listening lessons in this text. Students who are selected will go back and study those lessons in detail, write out a lesson plan, and give a five- to ten-minute presentation on the lesson.
