  - Back: In the Reading section, test takers can also click on Back at any time to return to the previous question.

  • TOEFL iBT Listening test Playback and Question Formats

The lectures in the TOEFL iBT test reflect the kind of listening that occurs in an academic area. In some of the lectures, the professor does all the talking, with an occasional comment by a student. In other lectures, the professor may engage the students in discussion by asking questions that are answered by the students. The pictures that accompany the lecture help the test taker know whether one or several people will be speaking. The following pictures are good examples; click on the thumbnail to enlarge the picture.

After the listening material is played, test takers both see and hear each question before they see the answer choices. This encourages them to listen for main ideas.

There are four question formats in the Listening section:

 I. Traditional multiple-choice questions with four answer choices and a single correct answer.

II. Multiple-choice questions with more than one answer (e.g., two answers out of four or more choices.)

III. Questions that require test takers to order events or steps in a process.

IV. Questions that require test takers to match objects or text to categories in a chart.

The following pictures are good real examples of question format.
